This post, which shares information on the invention of the modern car, the first car accident, and local auto body shops, is brought to you by the Valhalla personal injury attorneys at Banville Law.
Nearly 280 years before the first gasoline-powered car was invented, the steam engine was patented by a man named Jeronimo de Ayanz. Ayanz used the engine to propel water out of mines, however, many historians don't even qualify his invention as an engine because it had no cylinders or pistons. It was almost 100 years later that another inventor created a steam-powered engine with pistons and cylinders.
Over the next century and a half, many inventors improved upon these initial designs and eventually, a man named Karl Benz patented the first gasoline engine. He then built a three-wheeled vehicle that was powered by this engine, a vehicle that is now considered the first modern car. After successfully selling several of his cars, Benz also built a four-wheeled model.
Benz wasn't the only person who was building personal vehicles. In the United States, James William Lambert built several models and while test driving, became the first person to crash their car.
On the day of the first accident, Lambert, who lived in Ohio City, Ohio, took his homemade three-wheeled car for a drive. He didn't realize that the car was very unstable and when a tire hit a tree root, it spun out of control and hit a hitching post. Lambert and his passenger were thankfully unharmed.
Not long after this accident, Lambert built a four-wheeled vehicle and took that for a drive. This time, the engine caught fire and the car burned. Lambert once again escaped unharmed.
