Daniel David Palmer was a practicing magnetic healer in 1885 when he discovered an interest in the spine. This interest sparked when the janitor who cleaned his office showed Palmer a knot in his back. He told Palmer that the knot had appeared several years before after he had lifted an object and felt a pop. Since that time, the janitor had experienced almost constant discomfort.
Palmer offered to help by trying to do what he felt was realigning the spine. The pressure and movement he used released the knot and the janitor reported feeling immediate relief from his pain. Later on, Palmer also told others that the janitor, who had been mostly deaf, had regained his hearing because of the adjustment.
Palmer began to study the spine and the connections in the body and in 1887, opened the Palmer School Of Chiropractic.
Today, more than 7,000 Americans are licensed practitioners and chiropractic care is officially recognized as a form of medication.
Most chiropractic patients report that they:
It's important to discuss your complete medical history with your chiropractor and to follow their recommendations in order to obtain the best outcome. Be sure to let your chiropractor know about other treatments you are undergoing.
No, chiropractic adjustments shouldn't hurt. Chiropractors focus on using the least amount of pressure possible when performing an adjustment.
