This post, which has been provided by our experienced Diamond District personal injury attorneys at Banville Law, will go over a brief history of the invention of the car, the first car accident, and auto body shops in the neighborhood.
There is some debate over this question, however, most historians agree that Karl Benz invented the first version of the modern car. In 1886, Benz was awarded a patent for a vehicle that he called the "Motorwagen". The vehicle had three wheels and ran on a gasoline engine. Benz sold several Motorwagens and also designed and built a four-wheeled version.
Throughout Europe and America, other inventors also began to build their own gasoline-powered cars, some of which were popular and sold to families and some of which were used only by the inventor. One of those inventors was James William Lambert.
Not only did Lambert build his own vehicles for personal use, but he was also the first person to crash his car.
Lambert's first car was three-wheeled, with one wheel in the front and two in the back. He didn't know it at the time, but his vehicle was very unstable. When he took it for a drive with a friend, he hit a large tree root and the car spun out of control, finally coming to a stop when it struck a hitching post. Neither of the passengers was seriously hurt.
Later, Lambert built a four-wheeled model and during a test drive, the engine on that vehicle caught on fire and the vehicle was totaled. Thankfully, Lambert's designs never went past his own use!
In the early days, inventors had to make their own repairs when something broke or an accident happened. Today, car owners can choose from various auto body shops in their area.
