Society of Illustrators

Banville Law’s personal injury attorneys in Manhattan, NY, have kindly sponsored this article to our fellow readers who enjoy spending time exploring new museums full of historical artifacts, information, and materials.

Established in 1901, the Society of Illustrators is known as the oldest nonprofit organization committed to providing American illustration art. In 1981, the Museum was established and provided visitors with educational art programs, workshops, exhibitions, and historical artifacts.

History of the Society

The Society was founded by nine artists and one businessman who had the following philosophy, “The object of the Society shall be to promote the art of illustration generally and to hold exhibitions from time to time.” This philosophy was used as building blocks to form the museum into what it is today.

During World War I, the Society of artists was called upon to help the U.S. Government support the war by active service or other military involvement. Following the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression, the society members began producing theatrical performances, skits, and other live performances for Manhattan residents.

Fast forward through many historic life events, the Society remains committed to the public community and continues to donate to a variety of educational programs such as the U.S. Air Force Art Program.

Come Visit

Today, the Museum houses 2,500 pieces in their collection that is often used by educational institutions.

When visiting, look out for American Illustrations from legendary artists such as Rockwell Kent, Brad Holland, Howard Pyle, N.C., and Bernie Fuchs.

The Society of Illustrators is a multi-layered organization that offers illustrators a hub to analyze, display, and present their works of art to aspiring artists and renowned leaders in the art industry.

If you’d like to visit, the Museum is now taking appointments online.
