History

Glendale is a longstanding community that dates back to the early 19th century. Before the neighborhood was known as Glendale, the area was referred to as Fresh Pond. If you have ever visited Glendale, you will notice a significant number of cemeteries in the community. The presence of cemeteries is a result of the Rural Cemetery Act of 1847, which didn't allow for any additional cemeteries to be created in Manhattan. Due to this restriction, many people went to outer boroughs, including Queens, to form cemeteries, and Glendale was one of the communities in which developers took an interest. For several years, the neighborhood was referred to as the cemetery belt before the neighborhood further developed in the 20th century. As markets shifted throughout the 1900s, Glendale became the site of several breweries. By the latter 1900s, Glendale was one of the few neighborhoods not struck by crime and poverty in Queens. The neighborhood has since maintained its reputation as a timid neighborhood comparatively. Today, Glendale is a peaceful area where many family-oriented businesses stand in place of former industrial sites.
