Benz: Builder Of The First Modern Car

Karl Benz worked for several years to design his "Motorwagen" which was a three-wheeled model. In 1879, he received a patent for the first two-stroke gasoline-powered engine. A few years later, in 1885, he built his first model of the vehicle he named the "Motorwagen". In 1886, he received a patent for the Motorwagen and began to build additional vehicles for sale. He then designed a four-wheel version.

By the 1890s Benz had sold about 25 of his Motorwagens. While he continued his work, others in France and Germany created their own gasoline-powered vehicles. In American, the Duryea brothers designed and built the Duryea Motorwagon.
