Auto Body Shops In Yonkers

It has been nearly 150 years since the invention of the modern automobile. In this article, the Yonkers personal injury attorneys at Banville Law discuss the history of the car, the first car accident, and auto body shops in this neighborhood.

Karl Benz: Father Of The Modern Car

Karl Benz was absolutely fascinated by engines and in 1879, he patented the first two-stroke gasoline powered engine. In 1886, Benz received another patent, this time for a three-wheeled vehicle that he named the "Motorwagen". The Motorwagen is now recognized as the first version of the modern car.

He wasn't alone - several other German and French inventors built their versions of the car and overseas, the Duryea brothers built the first American car, the Duryea Motorwagon. Although these initial models could only reach top speeds of 16 mph, it was still an exciting change in the world of transportation.

With all modes of transportation there ultimately has to be the first accident. With cars, the first documented crash took place in Ohio City, Ohio.

James William Lambert was driving his single-cylinder gasoline powered car with a friend as a passenger. During their journey, one of the tired of the car hit a large tree root and Lambert lost control of the wheel. The vehicle finally came to a stop when it hit a hitching post. Thankfully, Lambert and his friend were not injured.

Demand Results In The Creation Of Individual Body Shops

The number of people seeking to purchase cars grew quickly - as did the number of accidents. Car manufacturers realized that the mass production of parts would help them to meet that demand as well as provide the ability to perform repairs in a timely manner. Over time, this allowed individual mechanics to open their own repair shops.
