Although physicians have understood for thousands of years that spinal manipulation can provide relief for patients, chiropractic care wasn’t officially founded until 1887.
In 1885, a man named Daniel David Palmer was working in his office when a janitor came in. As Palmer told it, he noticed that the janitor had a knot near his spine and he asked the man about it. The janitor told Palmer that the knot had been there for several years and that he first noticed it after feeling a pop in his back while lifting a heavy object.
Palmer offered to try and treat the man and ultimately performed his first spinal adjustment, although at the time he practiced magnetic healing. The immediate relief felt by his patient is what caused him to become keenly interested in the connection between the spine and a patient’s overall health.
Palmer coined the term “chiropractic care” and dedicated the rest of his life to studying the spine connections in the body.
It was in 1887 that Palmer shared his passion with the country and opened the Palmer School Of Chiropractic. Today, in the United States, there are over 7,000 chiropractors who actively treat patients for a wide variety of injuries.
