What Is Chiropractic Care?

Doctors who practice chiropractic care focus on the musculoskeletal system and how aligning the connections in the body can help a patient’s overall health.

The First Chiropractor

So who was the first person to use spinal manipulation to help a patient feel better? Although physicians have been aligning the spine and using gentle pressure to help patients for thousands of years, the person who created the name chiropractic care was Daniel David Palmer.

Palmer was a big believer in drugless medicine and before opening the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1887, he called himself a magnetic healer. It was a chance encounter with a janitor that resulted in a serious interest in the musculoskeletal system in 1885. Palmer noted his janitor, who was deaf, had a knot along his spine. He offered to adjust the man and the man reported feeling immediate relief after years of back pain.

Then, a few days later, the man told Palmer his hearing had improved after the adjustment. This caused Palmer to believe that if the musculoskeletal system was properly aligned, other health concerns would also improve.

Within twenty years of opening his school, Kansas recognized chiropractic care as an official form of medicine and began to test and issue licenses. It didn’t take long for the other 49 states to follow.

What Types Of Injuries Do Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractors can treat a wide variety of medical conditions and general symptoms, including:

  • shoulder pain/injury
  • ACL tear
  • herniated disc
  • muscle sprain/strain
  • neck pain/injury
  • back pain

The adjustments and treatments vary from patient to patient and are designed based on the patient’s medical history.

How Long Does A Patient Need To See A Chiropractor?

The number of time a patient needs to see their chiropractor depends upon their medical history and the injuries that they sustained. Some patients will only require a few adjustments while others will see their chiropractor regularly for years.

Will A Chiropractor Consult With Other Medical Professionals?

Yes. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications and do not perform surgeries. Instead, they work with a patient’s other treating physicians to create an overall treatment plan.
