In the 1970s, a Chinese community established itself in the neighborhood of Flushing. Taiwanese immigrants began the surge but were quickly followed by other groups of Chinese immigrants. An estimate done by the Flushing Chinese Business Association approximated in 1986 that 60,000 Chinese identified individuals lived in Flushing alone. By 1990, the area held an estimated 41% Asian population. According to the Daily News in 2011, Flushing's Chinatown ranked as New York City's second-largest Chinese community with 33,526 Chinese, surpassed only by the Brooklyn Chinatown , and is even larger than Manhattan's Chinatown.
Flushing Chinatown, or otherwise known as Mandarin Town, is the world's largest and one of the fastest-growing Chinatowns, known as the "Chinese Times Square”. The Chinatown of Flushing is centered around the intersection of Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Here, you will find many of the area's Chinese businesses located on the blocks around, or west of, Main Street. However, the businesses are continuing to expand southeastward along Kissena Boulevard and northward beyond Northern Boulevard.
