Wykagl is a suburban community in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York. The community's fascinating name, Wykagl, is commonly believed to have originated through the combination of two Native American words: wigwos, meaning birch bark, and keag, meaning country. It is presumed that the name was shortened by an Algonquian-speaking band of Lenape who originally inhabited the area.
Around the end of the 19th century, this "Upper Rochelle" area was primarily farmland except for the Wykagyl Country Club, which relocated to its current site in 1905.
In 1912, home development in New Rochelle was quickly extending northward, with North Avenue serving as the central passageway. Many bankers and investors began amassing expansive tracts of forest surrounding the Wykagyl Country Club and incorporated the area in the Wykagyl Reservation name. The reservation was located to take advantage of the new Westchester and Boston Railway commuter line.
The Wykagyl railroad station was named by Alfred Feltheimer, the architect who designed railroad stations. Feltheimer chose to name the station "Wykagyl" because of its adjacent location to the private country club. The new railroad line encouraged new construction, prompting a population jump.
Developers saw the potential in the area and fast-tracked the construction of fine homes in well-landscaped communities. "Wykagyl Gardens," one of the largest apartment complexes in the country at the time, was also built adjacent to the railroad station.
Development in Wykagyl has since expanded. Today the area's Elizabethan and Cotswold Tudors, Mediterranean-style villas, and classic colonials architectural styles are well received by its residents. The community is centered around an 18-hole golf course and country club, and a small business district.
