History

The historical museum is also known as Frederick Van Cortlandt House and is located on the southwestern end of Van Cortlandt Park. The Georgian-style home was built in 1748 for the family of Frederick Van Cortlandt, who unfortunately passed away before its completion, leaving the newly built property to his son James.

The Van Cortlandt's were a wealthy, prominent family who was held to the highest regard. The family established a grist mill on the property as well as a grain plantation. During the Revolutionary War, the house was used by George Washington and a few others as shelter.

In 1889, the Van Cortlandt plantation and house were sold to the City of New York, and the plantation is the location of what is the Van Cortlandt Park. The house has operated as a historic house museum since 1896 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1967 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Visit

The historical museum is open to the public for a small fee with both individual and group tours. The museum houses a collection of 18th and 19th-century artifacts such as furniture, sculptures, pottery, and other objects. Along with the collections housed inside the museum, the exterior also stands as an architectural feature with its construction and characteristics around the house.
