Oakwood Heights is a neighborhood in Mount Vernon, New York. Home to charming shops and tree-lined streets, its residents' quaint town is beloved and falls within ZIP code 10553.

History

The area of Oakwood Heights before the turn of the 20th century consisted of mostly farmland and an original farmhouse that still stands on Magnolia Avenue.

The town began to develop during the turn of the 20th century. At the time, the area was considered a "highly restricted" residential park. The neighborhood was advertised as an ideal location for New York City commuters due to the recently extended and nearby New York Railroad lines.

The Oakwood Heights core development companies included J. B. Thill and Co. and the Milligan Company. Prominent architects, including Lewis Bowman, designed some of the homes.

J.B. Thill and Co. played a prominent role in developing the area as developers and real estate speculators. The company purchased large tracts of land from the NY Railroad to develop Oakwood Heights and Chester Heights in concert with the expansion of the railroad lines.

J.B. Thill and Co. was active from 1899 - 1930, with office addresses in Mount Vernon and New York City.

Until the 1960s, Oakwood Heights had its own station stop at North Columbus Avenue and Washington Street.

Oakwood Heights is known for its stunning homes and charming curb appeal, and much of that is thanks to the renowned architect Lewis Bowman, who designed many of the neighborhood's homes when he was an architect with Gramatan Homes. Bowman was raised in Mount Vernon and was the first recipient of a fellowship in architecture awarded at Cornell as a standout student with several undergraduate awards.
