Sunnyside is represented by the New York City Council's 26th District and patrolled by New York City Police Department's 108th Precinct.

History

Sunnyside's name originates from the Bragaw family. In 1713, the French family purchased the land and named their estate "Sunnyside Hill."

In its beginnings, Sunnyside was a rural hamlet mostly consisting of small farms and marshland.

The community officially incorporated into Long Island City in 1870 and developed into a bedroom community after the Queensboro Bridge was completed in 1909.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the neighborhood expanded, and several six-story apartment buildings were constructed.

Today, the area offers residents a dense-urban feel and is home to many growing families.

Sunnyside Garden Historic District

Within Sunnyside stands the Sunnyside Garden Historic District. The district was built between 1924 and 1928, roughly taking up 16 blocks, with more than 600 buildings.

Covering 77 acres between Queens Boulevard and Sunnyside Yard, Sunnyside Gardens was founded by developer Alexander Bing and architects Clarence Stein and Henry Wright.

The project developed following discussions amongst the architects and became one of the first planned communities in the United States.

The homes within the district include one-, two-, and three-family homes, and a few apartment buildings, all made of Hudson brick. Each home has a small front garden facing the street and a private garden in the rear.

The district also consists of 12 courts including,

  • Carolin Gardens
  • Colonial Court
  • Hamilton Court
  • Hamilton Court Apartments
  • Harrison Place
  • Jefferson Court
  • Lincoln Court
  • Madison Court North and South
  • Monroe Court Apartments

The Sunnyside Gardens was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places on September 7, 1984, and designated as an official city landmark district by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on June 26, 2007.

Today, The Sunnyside Gardens Historic District includes 66 contributing buildings and 12 contributing sites and is beloved and cared for by the Sunnyside Preservation Alliance.
