Bronxville is a village in Westchester County, New York, and is part of the town Eastchester. The village spans 1 square mile and hosts an approximate population of 6,408. The charming English- styled village belongs to ZIP code 10708.

History of Bronxville

Bronxville belongs to a region that was deeded to British colonists in 1666. However, the first settlers were European and arrived in the early 18th century. The two founding occupants were the Underhill and Morgan families. The UnderHill's developed a sawmill and gristmill, which was the first factory to ever exist in the area.

When millionaire real-estate and pharmaceutical mogul William Van Duzer Lawrence found Bronxville, he sparked areas development as an affluent suburb of the New York City area. With newly built grand homes, the area became known as "Bronxville". Today, Lawrence's influence is honored in the historic Lawrence Park neighborhood, the Houlihan Lawrence Real Estate Corporation, and Lawrence Hospital.

In the second half of the 19th century, the neighborhood's population grew due to the expansion of the Long Island Railroad, which allowed commuters to travel from Westchester County into New York City.

Following the completion of the Bronx River Parkway in 1925, the village rapidly expanded with buildings mostly built by the Lawrence Family. By 1959, the family managed 97% of the rental market.

The Gramatan Hotel

The Gramatan Hotel opened in 1905 on Sunset Hill and dominated the skyline of the village of Bronxville. The building's stunning Spanish Colonial, or Mission, style architecture was the epitome of high style and elegance.

The hotel was named after Gramatan, the chief of the local Siwanoy Indian tribe centered in the Gramatan Rock area above Bronxville Station. While the hotel was demolished in 1970, it was a signifier of the area's development. A complex of townhouses was built on the site in 1980, but there are still remnants of the hotel's arcade on the ground level and elevator tower.

You can also find historical remnants of Bronxville at the Bronxville Women's Club and Masterton-Dunsberry House, which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The village was also ranked eighth in Bloomberg's "America's 100 Richest Places" in 2017 and 2018, and ninth in 2019, and is also the second richest town in the state of New York.
