The business was first located in a small basement space on West 45th Street near the Theater District, then moved to 51 West 47th Street, then spent many years at 41 West 47th Street within the Diamond District until it moved to its final location on 16 East 46th Street.
The bookstore was known as a literary salon, hosting meetings of the Finnegans Wake Society, the James Joyce Society, poetry and author readings, art exhibits, and more.
The Diamond District is one of the largest diamond and jewelry districts in the United States, and it is the second oldest surviving jewelry district in the United States.
A single day's trade on the block average earning is $400 million, and an estimated 90% of diamonds in the United States enter through New York's Diamond District. Many of the shop owners and managers of the district are Orthodox Jews, and the wholesale business made up most of the $24.6 billion in annual sales in 2019.
Today, you will likely find commission-based hawkers on the block as they usually solicit business for stores located on the street level.
