Mamaroneck is a town in Westchester County, New York. The area spans 14.06 square miles and hosts an approximate population of 29,156 with a population density of 4,490.23 per square mile. The neighborhood belongs to ZIP codes 10538, 10543, and 10583.
The land occupied by the town of Mamaroneck was originally purchased from Native American Chief Wappaquewam and his brother Manhatahan of the Siwanoy tribe by John Richbell, an Englishman 1661.
Mamaroneck was officially deemed a town by The New York Legislature on March 7, 1788. The Town of Mamaroneck was divided into three parts in the 1890s, consisting of the modern-day Village of Larchmont, an unincorporated area, and the Village of Mamaroneck, the rest of that village is in the town of Rye.
The division was made to meet the growing demand for municipal services that the town could not provide. At the time, a town could only provide basic government functions such as organizing and supervising elections, administering judicial functions and maintaining highways.
During the 1890s, the parts of Mamaroneck that were situated closest to the water thrived. The town began to grow, and the Larchmont Manor, with its beaches along Long Island Sound, had become a well-known summer resort for families from New York City. Soon enough, people began to live in Mamaroneck year-round.
At the time, a large percentage of Mamaroneck's population lived northeast of the Manor near Mamaroneck Harbor.
The Mamaroneck Harbor was the commercial center of town where fishing, shipping, and manufacturing were conducted. As the area's population expanded, residents soon sought out proper water supply, sewage disposal, garbage collection, sidewalks, and improved street lighting, police, and fire protection.
In 1891, residents of Larchmont Manor were able to obtain a charter from the Legislature under which they incorporated their section of town into a village. By 1895, residents of Mamaroneck's most developed and populated sections voted to incorporate as the Village of Mamaroneck.
Mamaroneck became home to the Winged Foot Golf Club in 1921. The club was founded by a group largely made up of The New York Athletic Club members and was constructed and opened in June 1923.
The golf club has hosted several professional tournaments, including the 1997 PGA Championship and the 1929, 1959, 1974, 1984, 2006, and 2020 U.S. Open.
