Jericho is a hamlet and census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, located in ZIP codes 11753 and 11853. Jericho hosts an approximate population of 13,800 and is served by the Jericho Union Free and the Syosset Central School Districts. The charming area is equal parts land (4.1 square miles) and water (4.1 square miles).
Jericho, mainly located in the Town of Oyster Bay, had belonged to the Robert Williams Plantation in 1648. The area was settled by English families who were members of the Society of Friends, a historically Christian set of denominations. Many settlers fled from persecution and sought humble lives as farmers.
Jericho's name was changed from Lusum in 1692 after the town in the Middle East near the Jordan River mentioned in the Bible as part of the Promised Land.
A notable preacher of the Quaker doctrine named Elias Hicks married Jemima Seaman in 1771 and moved their family to Jericho. He served many of the Quakers who had suffered in the Revolutionary Way during the British occupation of Long Island.
Following the war, Jericho's residents returned to farming, and the area was peaceful once again. The Friends Meeting House was built in 1778, a Quaker school was built in 1793, and the Charity Society of Jericho and Westbury was founded in 1794.
From then on, the area continued to prosper, and with the founding of the Jericho Water District in 1923, improvements to infrastructure were made.
With a newly rebuilt area, new elementary schools were built, including the Robert Seaman School in 1953, a new Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1938, and the population increased.
Following World War II, Phebe Underhill Seaman sold a large piece of her land to real estate developers, and the property was developed for more suburban housing.
