In the 19th-century, Riverdale became home to many of Manhattan's elite estates. For example, in North Riverdale, the area now known as Fieldston was Major Joseph Delafield's estate. In 1829, he purchased the 250 acres and named it after his family residence in England. More affluent businessmen would continue to make Riverdale their year-round residence thanks to the construction of the railroads.
Cornelius Vanderbilt consolidated his railroad operations into one terminal and laid tracks along the north side of the Harlem River. This design allowed trains from the south to join with the Harlem and New Haven lines, ultimately leading them into Manhattan to his new Grand Central Depot. The Hudson Line continues to use this path even today.
In 1909, the Delafield family mapped out the Fieldston neighborhood to begin developing the land. Initially, it was named Delafield Woods, later renamed Fieldston. To maintain as much of its natural landscape, Albert E. Wheeler, the project's civil engineer, did not use a traditional grid plan and instead followed the curves of the land. Construction of the first house began in 1910 and a year later was completed. By the beginning of the 21st century, Fieldston was one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in New York City and continues to do well.
North Riverdale is a suburb located in the northwest portion of the New York City borough, Bronx, and shares the northern border with Yonkers, New York. Along with Fieldston and Kingsbridge, Riverdale is part of Community District 8. With one of New York's highest elevations, from different locations, you can view the following landmarks:

In 2010, the population in Riverdale was 48,049, with a median household income of $53,986 and less than a 15% poverty rate. The neighborhood consists of a mixture of private residences and apartment buildings and is low in crime. Its residents are mainly Irish Catholics but since 2003 has become predominantly Jewish.

North Riverdale is the home to one of Mark Twain's former residence, Wave Hill. A gray fieldstone mansion was built upon the 28-acre estate for the original owner and publisher, William Henry Appleton.
