Learn About Syosset in New York

Early History

Located in the northeastern part of Oyster Bay on Long Island lies a quaint patch of farmland, Syosset. Although initially belonging to the Matinecock Indians, who were part of the Lenape tribe, Robert Williams purchased the land in 1648 along with the areas now known as Hicksville, Jericho, Woodbury, and Plainview.

Contrary to early beliefs, the name did not derive from the Native Americans. Instead, it is now understood to be from a poor pronunciation of the Dutch name Schouts Bay, the present-day Oyster Bay. After the addition of the first Post Office in 1855, the name would become formal.

The Gold Coast Era

Thanks to the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road, the town quickly went from producers of dairy, produce, and meats to booming with factories and hotels. These large economic profits inspired the sale of the farmlands to affluent industrialists from Manhattan. Multimillion-dollar mansions replaced some of the farmland and sparked the era known as the Gold Coast Era. A few of the early wealthy families were:

  • the Cheshires
  • the Schencks
  • the Van Sise
  • the Ketchams
  • the Jacksons

However, this era came to a halt after a few decades due to the Great Depression in the 1930s. Followed by the blight that took out all the remaining crops, builders bought and transformed Syosset into the residential area that it is today.

Historical Landmarks

Even though builders bought the land at such a low cost and turned most into residential areas, some historical landmarks stand today. A walk through downtown will allow you to visit the following attractions:

  • The Syosset Long Island Railroad Station
    • Erected in 1854 and credited with the economic boom that transformed Syosset.
  • Fred's Barber Shop
    • Named after Fred Maimone, an immigrant from Italy, this is known as the oldest business still operating in downtown Syosset.
  • Syosset Fire Department Headquarters
    • This station was built in 1953, replacing the old station on Muttontown Road, with a gong over 100 years old on display since they opened.
  • Berry Hill-Split Rock Intersection
    • In honor of the WWI and WWII veterans, a monument and cannon were placed on display here for a short period after the war. Even though officials would eventually sell the cannon for scrap, the monument would become part of the Memorial Park display.
