All About Lincoln Park, NY

The personal injury attorneys in Lincoln Park, NY, at Banville Law, have kindly offered the following details on the area's history and highlights.

Lincoln Park

The neighborhood of Lincoln Park is located within Yonkers, New York, in Westchester County. It is just south of Dunwoodie and west of Park Hill. The Saw Mill River Parkway travels along the eastern border, and Van Cortlandt Park begins at its southern edge.

History of the Park

George Tippett purchased land from Elias Doughty in 1668. This included a large estate that took up most of the land from the Hudson River to the Bronx River and Saw Mill River. However, due to their loyalty to the British Crown, George's descendants were forced from the land following the American Revolutionary War. The land was confiscated and sold.

The area was initially the site of the Battle of Tibbett's Brook or Battle of Kingsbridge in 1778. During this battle, Sachem Daniel Nimham, a Native American chief, and many other Americans fought the Queen's Rangers led by John Graves Simcoe. Ninham led members of the Mahican and Wappinger tribes. The battle went on from August 30 to 31. The British won the war that left Ninham and several other members dead. The natives were buried in Indian Field near Van Cortlandt Park. Four British soldiers also died, and three were injured, including commanding Simcoe.

Leonard W. Jerome purchased the site of Tibbetts Brook Park in 1872. It then became part of Valley Farms, and soon a garbage dump was established on the northern side of the site. Peckham's Lake, created by the overflow of Tibbetts Brook, was used for swimming despite the high levels of pollution and disease. Due to this and the massive amounts of mosquitos, the area was referred to as The Jungle.

In 1923, the Westchester County Park Commission purchased the land from Valley Farms and proposed building a park. Construction began in September 1924, which included getting rid of fourteen feet of garbage. The park opened to the general public in 1927 and just contained a boat dock. Soon a pool was built, allowing residents to swim in it rather than the brook. In 2007, three athletic fields were added.
