Motorcycles are a common occurrence throughout the streets and highways of New York City. While driving can be dangerous enough as it is, motorcycles pose a greater threat and for obvious reasons that a motorcycle removes the rider from the protective walls of a truck or car. This exposes the body to any objects and surfaces on the road in the event that there’s an accident. Also, a motorcycle is a small two-wheeled vehicle. It therefore has less stability than bigger four-wheeled vehicles.

Common Causes Of Motorcycle Accidents

Protective gear such as high visibility jackets and helmets are a must; however, the best policy is to never get caught up in an accident in the first place and to use the safety gear as a backup plan. Here are some common causes of motorcycle accidents in New York City:

  • Research indicates that most motorcycle collisions are as a result of the failure of other motorists to spot motorcyclists at night or in heavy traffic.
  • Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that high speed is another causal factor of motorcycle accidents. High speed shifts the alignment of the motorcycle which causes the motorcyclist to lose control and hence, causing an accident.
  • A motorcyclist’s negligence also leads to accidents. Negligence could be improper turning or breaking. Most of the motorcycle accidents occur at junctions and a t-point of intersections. They are also common if the motorists violate the rules that govern the right of way as well as other rules regarding the control of traffic.
  • Drunken motorcyclists. Findings from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) state that there was high level of alcohol found in the blood of motorcycle accident victims. Read the report here.
  • Bad road conditions in NYC such as debris, potholes and uneven places are also a contributing factor to major motorcycle accidents.

Contrary to popular belief, harsh weather conditions are not among major causes of motorcycle accidents in New York City. However, if the said weather conditions affect visual alertness, then it intensifies the risk of accidents occurring.

The Sobering Reality Of Motorcycle Accidents

Here are the statistics from an analysis of 3,600 motorcycle traffic reports that were backed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • The leading cause of motorcycle accidents is in the failure of other motorists to spot motorcycles in traffic.
  • The least common causes of motorcycle accidents include animal involvement at 1%, roadway defects at 2% and vehicle failure at 3%.
  • Majority of motorcycle accidents analyzed involved a short trip linked with friends, errands or some other recreation activity.
  • 92% of the riders involved in motorcycle accidents lacked essential training. Most had learned cycling through friends while others were self-taught.
  • In a normal accident, the rider usually has less than 2 seconds to act in a manner that will avoid a collision.

These sobering statistics affirm the already known fact that motorcyclists need proper training. With the rider only having 2 seconds in which to avoid a possible accident, it is important to be equipped with the right reflex reactions. Even with most motorcycle accidents occurring out of sheer bad luck, the more likely ones can be prevented by ensuring that all safety measures are put in place and that all the traffic laws are followed.

What To Do If You’ve Been Injured

Being injured in an accident affects more than the injured party – it affects the victim’s loved ones as well. This is due to the fact that injuries suffered in the accident can lead to expensive medical bills, loss of income and financial difficulties for the entire family. Filing a lawsuit involving a motorcycle accident can be very difficult, not to mention complicated. If you know someone who has been injured in a motorcycle accident, then you should seek legal counsel so as to get the compensation that you deserve – the sooner the better.
