The start of the new year has already seen it's share of accidents. Here is this week's Banville Law New York State accident report round up. On January 7th, 2016 four people were injured with one suffering grave injuries, following a crash that involved a tractor-trailer and other vehicles in Brooklyn. The accident took place in the westbound lanes of the Gowanus Expressway.
According to fire officials, one person had to be rescued from one of the vehicles. Two other people had minor injuries and one did not require medical attention.
Following this accident, all outbound lanes had to be closed for some time which caused traffic to back up across the Verrazano Bridge all the way into Staten Island.
A Malone woman was killed in a three-car crash that took place on January 6th, 2016. The deadly crash shut down Route 11 for nearly six hours.
The woman has been identified as 45-year-old Susan Cogan. Police reports say she was trying to pass several cars and ended up hitting the passenger side of an oncoming car that swerved, causing it to collide head-on with another car. A two-year-old in one of the cars had non-life-threatening injuries and two other drivers were hurt.
Tuesday night, January 5th, 2016, troopers state that driver, Lynn Saylor, was driving north in the southbound lanes of State Route 590 in Irondequoit. Saylor's pick up truck crashed into another vehicle head-on.
The 63-year-old woman was charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as other traffic and vehicle violations. She had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The woman she crashed into was treated for minor injuries.
An investigation is still being carried out concerning this wrong-way crash.
A 17-year-old high school senior was one of four people killed in New Year's crashes. The Rockland County teenager was killed on Bay State roads.
The 17-year-old has been lovingly remembered as a much-loved student athlete. He was identified as Patrick J. Sullivan and was a member of the National Honor Society as well as a baseball and football player, and a wrestler with dreams of going to Pennsylvania State University in the fall.
Long Island police state that a bicyclist was hit and killed by an SUV as he was trying to cross the Montauk Highway.
Police say he was struck by a Toyota Highlander in Shirley on December 30th, 2015.
The man was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Medical Center in East Patchogue. He was, unfortunately, later pronounced dead. The SUV driver was not hurt and he did stay on the scene of the accident.
On Tuesday, December 29, 2015, a driver on a Long Island Highway careened off the road and was involved in a fatal crash.
According to New York State Police, the driver identified as Raquel Liberte, lost control of her car as she drove southbound on the Meadowbrook State Parkway near Uniondale and East Meadow. Police say she was driving at a very high rate of speed when she lost control of the car. The car went onto the road shoulder, hitting a tree and killing Liberte.
There was one passenger in the car, Evelissa Ducatel, who was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
