At the time, the Queensboro Corporation saw a development opportunity and acquired the land known today as East Elmhurst. Before the late 1800s, the land wasn't largely developed aside from the Gala Amusement Park, which opened in 1886, but the corporation knew the area had potential. Eventually, several homes were erected in the area, and a popular Ferris Wheel and amusement area became known as the "Coney Island of Queens." However, by 1929, the area was shut down and became the site of the North Beach Airport, which is known today as Laguardia Airport.
The airport brought major foot traffic and tourists to the neighborhood allowing for economic advancement.
