The History of Pomonok, NY

The car accident attorneys in Pomonok, NY, at Banville Law have provided the following article for your enjoyment.

Pomonok

Pomonok, New York, is located south of the Long Island Expressway and just over six miles north of the John F. Kennedy International Airport. The intersection of Parsons Boulevard and Jewel Avenue creates the center of the neighborhood.

History

The name Pomonok originates from the Native American word for the land where there is traveling by water. The neighborhood was initially home to a golf course and the Pomonok Country Club. The country club built in 1886 was designed by Devereux Emmet. Henry Picard won the PGA Championship that it hosted in 1939. Members separated ways and sold the course in 1949.

The Electchester, a housing co-op where residents own a share of the building, was built on the location along with the Parsons Boulevard extension. Harry Van Arsdale, Jr. and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers established the housing complex in 1949. This was an attempt to offer affordable housing to minorities when the city was charged with catering only to white families. Electchester would later donate land for the construction of Public School 200, also known as The Magnet School of Global Studies and Leadership.

Joint Industry Board

Founded in 1943 by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Joint Industry Board, or JIB, is located in the center of Pomonok on Jewel Avenue. The organization works to provide the following for over 70,000 residents of communities in New York:

  • administer benefits for members and their families
  • electrical construction industry through education
  • provides safety programs for the electrical industry

Demographics

Pomonok consists of both low-income and upper-middle-income households, with Parsons Boulevard creating the divide. The neighborhood's multi-family housing and large apartments make up over 80% of the area's real estate, with very few single-family houses.

The area is quite diverse and has an extensive ancestral background. While most speak English as their first language, Chinese, Spanish and Russian are other primary languages. A breakdown of the residents' ancestries are the following:

  • 20.2% Puerto Rican
  • 14% Asian
  • 9.7% Dominican
  • 6.6% Irish
  • 5.8% Italian
  • 4.6% Russian
