The Heitz Place Courthouse continues to remain one of the only standing county courthouses since the break between Nassau and Queens dating back to 1895. Today, the building continues to play a big part in Long Island history as it houses the Hicksville Gregory Museum collection.

Collections

The Gregory Museum, also known as the Long Island Earth Science Center, holds its place on the National Register of Historic Places and houses Long Island's largest mineral collection, fossils from all over the world, and over 5,000 different types of moth and butterfly specimens.

The majority of the collection is located in one large room on the main floor of the building. In the room, you'll find walls lined with glass cabinets filled with all types of pieces from minerals, butterflies, fossils, and so much more.

The permanent minerals exhibit showcases major groups of rocks and minerals categorized by chemical classifications, including a fluorescent mineral display. Not only will you find an abundance of information on each mineral, but some also offer a gorgeous display of a polish gem of that classification.

One of the main features that bring thousands of museumgoers to this facility is the fascinating collections of dinosaur fossils. Though most of them are authentic fossils, there a few replicas on display to provide extended information.

If you proceed down the main hallway, you'll find yourself discovering the display of hundreds of butterflies and moths that have been collected from all over the world. The incredible display allows you to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of species from across regions.

Lastly, the remaining exhibit you must see when visiting the museum is the only remaining jail cell in the courthouse that offers a small look at what it was like to spend time in a small county jailhouse.
