Rego Park is a neighborhood in Queens, New York. The neighborhood spans 1.945 square miles and hosts an approximate population of 23,260. The neighborhood belongs to ZIP code 11374 and is located in Queens Community District 6.

History

Rego Park was built the Hempstead Swamp which, at one point, extended to St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village. The area was settled in 1653 by English and Dutch farmers who named the town Whitepot. It is believed that they named the area Whitepot because English settlers Anglicized the name.

The Hempstead Swamp turned out to be good land for farming so the colonists cultivated hay, straw, rye, corn, oats, and vegetables. They made money by selling their produce in Manhattan but by the end of the 19th century, Chinese farmers moved in and sold their goods exclusively to Chinatown.

The neighborhood was named Rego Park after the Real Good Construction Company began the development of the area in 1925. The term "Rego" comes from the first two letters of the first two words of the company's name.

The Real Good Construction Company built 535 eight-room houses for $8,000 each and by 1926 stores were built on Queens Boulevard and 63rd Drive. To accommodate the influx of residents, more apartment buildings were built from 1927–1928.

One of the biggest fires in the neighborhood occurred in February 1972 along the short block of 63rd Drive between Austin Street and the Long Island Railroad overpass. The "Rego Park Inferno" began in the second store on a block on Austin Street and quickly spread to neighboring stores until it reached the library. Once the fire reached the library, the oily books and wooden shelves went up in smoke and the flames went high up onto the embankment of the railroad.

Eventually, a new library opened across the street. Until then, the community was served by a "Book Mobile" library which was parked under the LIRR train tracks on 63rd Drive.
