Early History

The Upper East Side is considered the most wealthy neighborhood in the United States. Located in Manhattan, it helps to make up one of the five boroughs of New York City. However, this affluent neighborhood was once home to rarely used Native American fishing sites. The Native American Lenape Tribe, also known as the Delaware Indians, inhibited most of the following areas:

  • New York City
  • Long Island
  • Hudson Valley
  • New Jersey
  • Eastern Pennsylvania

Pushed out of their land by European colonists and later the Dutch, they can now be located in Oklahoma, leaving the Lenape territory broken apart into many areas.

Development

During the 19th century, the Upper East Side consisted of farmland, and it would not be until the completion of the New York and Harlem Railway that development would flourish. Families such as the Vanderbilt's, James Lenox, and Mary Mason Jones would own much of the designated land.
By the 1900s, more wealthy families moved into the Upper East Side, including by not limited to the following:

  • The Carnegie
  • The Rockefellers
  • The Roosevelts
  • The Kennedys
  • The Dukes
  • The Whitneys

In the 1950s, the elevated railways on Third and Second Avenues were demolished, making way for the construction of multi-level apartment blocks. The mansions, known as Millionaire's Row, would be torn down and replaced by apartments, townhouses, or commercial buildings. Fifth Avenue, which once was home to several private mansions during the Gilded Age, became the first to replace them and is now known as one of the most expensive avenues globally based on the stores that line it.

Demographics

The Upper East Side would become home to the following neighborhoods separated by Third Avenue and 77th:
Lenox Hill - Roosevelt Island, named after James Lenox
Carnegie Hill, named after Andrew Carnegie from Pittsburgh
Yorkville
Household income, based on reports from 2017, would average $123,894 and contains the highest concentration of personal net-worth. 83% of residents older than 25 years possess a college degree, and 14% have a high school degree or some college education.

The ethnic dynamics of the combined neighborhoods that make up the Upper East Side are as follows:

  • 79% White
  • 8.6% Asian
  • 7.1% Hispanic or Latino
  • 3.2% African American
  • 0.1% Native American
  • 0% Pacific Islander
  • 0.3% Other
  • 1.8% Two or More Races

The Upper East Side has consistently been a superior area for both residential and commercial development. Lined with luxury apartments and filled with high-end shopping, this neighborhood thrives with New York City's cultural influence.
