What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors use gentle pressure and movement to properly align the musculoskeletal system. In some cases, the pressure is applied using the hands, however, others prefer the use of tools. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications or perform surgery. Instead, they believe that by forming adjustments, the muscles, tendons, and nerves would function better and the overall health of the patient will improve.

Chiropractors do regularly treat their patients in conjunction with other treatments, such as the administering of pain medication and surgical correction of an injury. A chiropractor should be willing to review a patient’s medical history and consult with other physicians.

When Was Chiropractic Care Founded?

Throughout history, physicians have always known that the manipulation of the spine or even massage has health benefits. But it wasn’t until 1885 that Daniel David Palmer took an interest in the connection between the musculoskeletal system and a person’s health. Palmer discovered his passion for the treatment he would ultimately name chiropractic care while assisting a janitor in his building with a knot in his back.

The janitor reported that several years before speaking with Palmer, he had been lifting something and felt a pop in his back. Ever since that time, he had felt discomfort. Palmer used pressure to align the man’s spine and the janitor immediately reported that he felt significant relief.

Later, the janitor told Palmer that he believed the adjustment had also helped to improve his hearing.

Several years later, in 1887, Palmer opened the Palmer School of Chiropractic.
