Cars are something that most American's take for granted. Nearly every American household owns at least one car and these vehicles are the most common form of transportation in the country.
Just 150 years ago, this wasn't the case since the modern car had not yet been invented.
Karl Benz, a German inventor, obtained a patent for the first two-stroke gasoline-powered engine in 1879. By 1885, he had built what he named the "Motorwagen", a three-wheeled vehicle. He received a patent for this vehicle in 1886 and then built a four-wheeled version. By the 1890s, Benz had sold at least 25 Motorwagens.
At the same time that Benz was working on his new creations, the Duryea brothers were busy inventing the first gasoline-powered American car, the Duryea Motorwagon.
Accidents involving anything with wheels or a motor was not something new, so obviously it wasn't long before the very first car accident occurred.
An Ohio City man holds the record for the first car accident. James William Lambert was behind the wheel of his single-cylinder car when his tire hit a tree root. Lambert careened out of control and hit a hitching post. He and his passenger escaped the wreckage unscathed, however, the car was damaged.
Car accidents like this one and the increased demand for new cars resulted in the mass production of car parts. As a result, individual mechanics then opened their own shops, providing car owners a place to have work done without having to go to the car manufacturer.
