Benz received a patent for his first vehicle, known as a "Motorwagen" in 1886. The Motorwagen was gasoline-powered and sat upon three wheels. A few years after he released his first model, Benz also released a four-wheeled model.

James William Lambert has the honor of being the first driver to crash his car. Lambert was driving down a road with a friend in the passenger seat when the wheel of his single-cylinder car hit a tree root. This caused the car to become unbalanced and Lambert lost control. The car came to rest when it slammed into a hitching post.
Miraculously, despite not having many of the safety features offered in modern cars, Lambert and his friend sustained only minor injuries.
The rapid interest in car purchases and accidents like Lambert's resulted in car manufacturers choosing to create the mass production of car parts. In turn, this allowed individual mechanics to open their own auto body shops.
