If you've been involved in a car accident you're likely in the process of trying to schedule repairs for your car. This article, which discusses the invention of the engine and the car, as well as auto body shops in the area, has been provided by the Muttontown personal injury attorneys at Banville Law.
For thousands of years, inventors tried to find new ways to harness power. In the 1700s a man named Thomas Newcomen invented a small steam-powered engine that was used to pump water. The design, however, did not create enough power to do work other than pumping water.
Other inventors improved upon Newcomen's design, building a high powered steam engine, powerful enough to power a locomotive.
Although the steam engine was popular, many wondered if other forms of fuel could also be used to power transportation vehicles. In 1879, a German man, Karl Benz, patented a two-stroke gasoline engine. He placed this engine in a three-wheeled car that he named the "Motorwagen". Soon after receiving a patent for the Motorwagen, he created a four-wheeled model.
Benz wasn't the only person building gasoline-powered personal vehicles. The Duryea brothers built the first American car, the Duryea Motorwagon. As interest increased in the first cars, car companies were formed and parts were mass-produced.
The first recorded car accident took place in Ohio City, Ohio. James William Lambert was behind the wheel of the car that he had personally built, a three-wheeled model that he didn't realize was relatively unstable. The car hit a tree root and spun out of control, hitting a hitching post. Lambert and his passenger were unharmed but the car was damaged.
Lambert did not have good luck building his own vehicles - the next car he built caught fire during a test drive and was destroyed.
Unlike Lambert, car owners today have a plethora of auto body shops to choose from when repairs need to be made.
