Fordham Heights is a neighborhood located in the western portion of the Bronx, New York. The neighborhood spans 0.507 square miles and hosts an approximate population of 43,394 with a population density of 86,000 per square mile.

History

In 1666, a Dutch settler by the name of Jan Arcer established a community around modern-day 225th Street near the Harlem River. At the time, Arcer owned 3900 acres of land, which Francis Lovelace, the colonial governor of New York, approved for settlement. The land was known as "Fordham Manor" from 1671 to 1762, where sixteen families established farms.

The area of Fordham consists of Old Fordham Village, a section of Fordham that dates back to the English colonial era centered on the intersection of the Grand Concourse and Fordham Road.

The area dates back to 1751 when Fordham Manor was built. Today, the area is still home to historic places, including a small cottage in Poe Park where American poet Edgar Allan Poe spent his final years with his wife, Virginia.

Old Fordham Village began to grow in the 19th century when local farmers and dairymen were able to use the railroad to send their products to a growing New York City.
