History

The area of Maspeth, NY, was originally inhabited by the Mespeatches Indians, a Native American tribe. The neighborhood is named after the Maspat Indians' word for "at the bad water place."

Dutch and English settlers settled the area in the early 17th century. The Dutch purchased the land of Maspeth in 1635, and by 1642, the area was granted to Francis Doughty, a Presbyterian minister. The land grant made Maspeth the first English settlement in Queens, New York.

In 1652, the Queens area was generally referred to as Middleburg, which eventually developed into the neighboring community of Elmhurst.

Throughout the 17th century, the community was known for its water and milling industries, originally founded by the English Quakers. Following the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century, the neighborhood developed and constructed roads.

Before the neighborhood was officially named Maspeth, it was referred to as Columbusville until the 1890s.

In the 19th century, Maspeth saw an influx of immigration, and by the 1970s, the neighborhood largely consisted of Polish, Irish, and German residents.

Today, Maspeth is considered a desirable place to live in Queens, NY, and is known for its charming homes and convenient location.
