History

Middle Village was originally inhabited by Native American tribes and was settled by English settlers in 1816.

The land was largely a swamp area utilized as a hiding ground for soldiers during the American Revolutionary War. The area began to develop following the purchase of farmland of the west end of the area by a Manhattan Lutheran Church.

Following the Civil War, Middle Village became home to a large population of Germans. With a population influx, the neighborhood subsequently developed.

By 1873, the Williamsburgh and Jamaica Turnpike was constructed and became the main road in the area. In 1879, local officials established St. John Cemetery, a Roman Catholic burial ground.

With the cemetery's opening, several hotels and businesses opened in the surrounding area to accommodate visitors.

Middle Village faced revitalization in 1920 when the area developed through the Juniper Valley revitalization project. Throughout the 1920s, Middle Village became a notable area for housing development.

Across the neighborhood, former farmland became the sites of several single and double-family homes. The area's housing development is largely attributed to the Nansen Building Corporation and the Baier & Bauer Corporation. The Baier & Bauer company constructed thirty homes along Juniper Valley Road in 1927, and by 1928, they constructed over 150 single-family row houses.
