Bloomingdale is a neighborhood located in the borough of Manhattan, on the Upper West side, in New York City. The neighborhood spans a 15 block area that hosts a population of 1,297, consisting of 50.9% female residents and 49.1% male residents with a median age range of 45.2.

History

Bloomingdale, NY, is located between West 96th and West 110th Streets, the Hudson River, and Broadway. Today, the neighborhood is nearby by some of the biggest attractions in Manhattan, including The Museum of the City of New York and Central Park.

In its beginnings, the area of Bloomingdale was once home to the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum. The asylum, founded in 1821, was a private hospital for the care of the mentally ill, founded by New York Hospital.

The Bloomingdale Insane Asylum was proposed by Dr. Peter Middleton of Columbia (then King's) College on November 3, 1769.

By 1770, Doctors Peter Middleton, John Jones, and Samuel Bard presented to the Colonial Government a petition to incorporate a Public Hospital. On June 3, 1771, the petition was granted by a charter incorporating the "Society of the Hospital in the City of New York, in America," later termed the "Society of the New York Hospital."

In 1889, the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum moved to a different location in White Plains, NY, and is known today as New York-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center after the 1998 merger of NewYork and Presbyterian Hospitals.

Over time the neighborhood of Bloomingdale became distinguished enough from the Upper West Side to the south and Manhattan Valley to the east to warrant its own name.

Today, the neighborhood is well-beloved by residents and is home to the 103rd Street and 110th Street Cathedral Parkway Subway Station stops.
