Valentine Hicks purchased Hicksville, located in Nassau County, New York, within the town of Oyster Bay on Long Island. Hicks was the son-in-law of Elias Hicks, a Quaker preacher, and known abolitionist. Elias Hicks was born to farmers and took on the Quaker faith they practiced. He had a gift for speaking with strength and a sense of dramatization that resonated with the audience. Like many Quakers, Elias Hicks supported denouncing slavery and started the Charity Society of Jerico and Westbury Meetings that aided impoverished African Americans and provided schooling to their children.
It would not be until the completion of the Long Island Railroad that Hicksville would begin to prosper. Under the guide of two German-Americans, John Heitz and Fredrick Heyne, Hicksville would become the home to the Heinz Company factory. This German town with once desolate prairie ground would become booming production of crops. Due to the high population of Germans, they printed the first newspaper, the Long Island Central Zeitung, in German.
Due to plant diseases ruining the crops, land conversion was at an all-time high. Industries made their way into Hicksville in droves landing it in third place for the most businesses in the county in 1967. However, the railways became a transportation burden causing delays not only in commute but also for the fire department. In 2000, there were an estimated 13,000 homes and many large businesses like the Broadway Mall and the Kundan Galleria.
As a central hub for the Long Island Rail Road, the Hicksville station is today's busiest hub on the island. In 2016, the governor approved $132 million for improvements and renovations.

In addition to the renewed Railroad station, the town received $10 million to revitalize the downtown area. These initiatives plan to improve transportation, pedestrian traffic and increase public open spaces to encourage real estate development and the economy by supporting the local businesses. The town is now home to IKEA, the only one on the east side of New York. There has been an increase in annual household income from $101,341 in 2016 to $113,063 in 2019.
