Morrisania belonged to the Morris family until Lewis Morris offered the land as federal capital in 1790. Up until 1840, the area was largely rural, with few residents. However, once a railroad was extended to the town, Morrisania became more and more frequented by visitors, and soon enough, the population expanded.
During the first boom of population increase, most residents would commute to Manhattan for work and live in Morrisania simply for its residential lifestyle. Yet, as years went on, more and more people opened local businesses in Morrisania, and the town became popular for its skilled craftsmen. Soon enough, Morrisania had its own reputation, and once the subway was extended to the neighborhood in 1904, Morrisania saw another influx in population. At this point, Morrisania largely consisted of European immigrants. From the mid-late 1900s, the neighborhood saw a demographic shift, and the town was impacted by poverty after arson destroyed many of the local industrial buildings. The town was battling drug-related crimes and poverty while still recovering from arson committed during the late 1960s and the 1970s. Morrisania continues to fight against drug trafficking and addiction while being heavily policed since the mid-1900s. The neighborhood has made progress over the years and continues to develop until the present day.
