History

The history of Pelham Bay dates back to 1654 when former notable resident, Thomas Pell, purchased the land. Pell's purchase was part of the original Dutch West India Company grant. The notable chartered company consisted of foreign investors who were instrumental in the Dutch colonization of America. Following Pell's purchase, the area largely became farmland and later developed into an industrial area before modernization. Many confuse Pelham Bay with the Town of Pelham, a historical suburban town in Westchester County. Despite its similar name, the two neighborhoods have no relation. Pelham Bay developed throughout the 1900s, becoming a well-established urban community. The neighborhood has retained a positive reputation and is considered one of the best neighborhoods to live in New York City.

Population

Pelham Bay is home to a largely Hispanic population (53%). The neighborhood is also home to White (32%), African American (9%), and Asian (4%) residents, as well as residents who identify with two or more races (1%). Pelham Bay is a culturally infused area with an equal amount of female (50%) and male (50%) residents with a median age of 40 years. Pelham Bay residents are hardworking, with 82.24% of the population employed in white-collar jobs and 17.76% in blue-collar jobs. Of the working population, 63.79% work for private companies, 16.63% are government workers, 11.48% work for non-profit organizations, and 8.1% are self-employed. Residents of Pelham Bay live a financially comfortable lifestyle with an average household income of $77,937.
