History

The history of Port Chester begins in 1660 when three settlers from Greenwich, Connecticut, Thomas Studwell, John Coe, and Peter Disbrow, bought Mansuring Island along with some land near the Byram River from the Mohegan Indians.

That land is now Port Chester, and in 1665, the settlement was claimed by New York and Connecticut. Eventually, Connecticut gave the land to the New York Colony in 1683.

For nearly 105 years, there was a struggle for ownership over the area known today as Port Chester. Until, 1778 when the Legislature of New York ruled that the area was a part of Rye, New York.

From 1870 to the first World War, steamships regularly sailed through Port Chester to New York City. In the last two decades of the 19th century, public services expanded, and in the 1920s, the roads were widened and paved.

During the first and second world wars, over 5,000 men from Port Chester served, and after World War II, several corporations opened their headquarters in Port Chester. One of the largest corporations at the time was Lifesavers, whose former factory is currently a residential building.

Port Chester has drastically expanded and developed since its founding. The area has moved from an industrial center to a suburban residential municipality.

One cannot learn about the village's history without recognizing the tragic fire at Gulliver's nightclub. Home to Port Chester, Gulliver's had the deadliest dance club fire in the United States in more than a generation. The fire killed 24 young men and women and brought attention to the dangers of clubs without smoke alarms, fire-resistant walls, or occupancy limits.

Today, fire code reinforcement remains a top priority in Port Chester.

Since the early 21st century, Port Chester has undergone great development. Today, The Port Chester Historical Society, composed of community members, works to learn and teach the public about the great history of Port Chester.
