Hunts Point is a neighborhood located on a peninsula of the South Bronx, New York. The area spans 1.650 square miles and hosts approximately 12,281 with a population density of 7,400 per square mile. The neighborhood belongs to ZIP code 10474.
Before 1663, when European settler colonizers arrived, Hunts Point was occupied by the Wecquaesgeek, a Munsee-speaking band of Wappinger people. The Wecquaesgeek were displaced through land purchase conducted by Edward Jessup and John Richardson.
Following Jessup's death, his widow Elizabeth Jessup gave the land to her son, Thomas Hunt Jr., who the area is now named after.
During the time between Hunt's inheritance of the land and 1850, numerous wealthy families occupied the peninsula. Local legend tells that George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends, preached in the neighborhood in 1672.
As years went on, the Hunts Point neighborhood became well known as city dwellers flocked to the area between 1850 and 1900.
Later on, a great deal of property in Hunts Point was owned by Fox's and Leggett's son-in-law H.D. Tiffany, a member of the family who owned the famous jewelry store Tiffany & Co., which now has a storefront on Fifth Avenue. Thus, many of the streets in Hunts Point, including Fox, Tiffany, and Leggett Streets, got their names from these former landowners.
In the 20th century, Hunts point saw great residential growth along with industrial expansion. The IRT Pelham Line was built along Southern Boulevard, mansions were replacing apartment buildings, streets were replacing meadows, and the whole neighborhood was facing reconstruction.
New businesses began to open in the area, and as the businesses expanded, the reputation of Hunts Point grew amongst people in business. Hunts Point continued to develop, and between the openings of the New York City Produce market in 1967 and Hunts Point Meat Market in 1974, the neighborhood became an economic hot spot.
Unfortunately, the latter end of the 20th century did not serve the neighborhood as well. The neighborhood was frequented by arson and mass abandonment between 1960-1990, and nearly 60,000 residents left the area.
Despite the difficult times' Hunts Point faced at the end of the 20th century, the neighborhood still holds businesses and a small but dense residential area today.
In 2004, the New York City Department of City Planning designated a special Hunts Point District to incorporate zoning changes and encourage the growth of the food distribution center.
Hunts Point is currently home to one of the largest food distribution centers in the world. The center spans 329 acres, and by 2005, Hunts Point became the site for New York City's New Fulton Fish Market, replacing the 180-year-old fish market formerly located in downtown Manhattan. In addition, the area is known for its plethora of industrial job opportunities, with over 800 industrial businesses employing over 25,000 workers.
For the residential community in Hunts Point, there is Hunts Point Riverside Park. The park was the first to be built in the area in over 60 years and is the first of a planned series of parks to be linked by a bike route to create the South Bronx Greenway.
The park was spearheaded by Majora Carter, an urban revitalization strategist, and won the 2009 Rudy Bruner Award for Excellence in Public Spaces.
Today, Hunts Point is mainly industrial but is developing to appeal to a residential population. The area offers residents a dense urban feel and tons of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops that appeal to a younger crowd.
