As the area grew more diverse, Castle Hills suffered white flight leading to increasing poverty rates. Once more Hispanic Americans and African Americans moved to the area, Castle Hill was heavily policed. Castle Hill has continued to change through the 2000s leading to decreased crime rates and increased Latin American and Asian American presence. Today, Castle Hill is considered a thriving community.
Castle Hill has become a popular neighborhood for growing families to access public and private educational institutions. Within just a few short blocks, you will find over eight great schooling options. One of the most notable schools in Castle Hill is Equality Charter School. The public school hosts a student population of 643 in grades 6-12 with a student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1. The school is best known for its dedicated, caring teachers and intimate class sizes. The charter school has a graduation rate of 82%, and many graduates pursue higher education at Stony Brook University, Pace University, and CUNY Hunter College.
