History

Before Wakefield became the modern neighborhood it is today, it was largely farmland utilized by its early inhabitants. The neighborhood of Wakefield belonged to Westchester County before the Bronx's incorporation as a borough in 1895. Once the borough was incorporated, Wakefield and several other neighboring communities became part of New York County. From the mid-late 1800s, Wakefield experienced development after the New York and Harlem Railroad were completed. In the years following, Wakefield continued to progress, becoming a favorite place to live in New York City throughout the 1900s. Today, Wakefield is still considered a favorable place to live and is known for its housing developments, neighborhood parks, and delicious restaurants.

Population

Wakefield is a longstanding community that has housed a diverse demographic for several generations. The neighborhood largely consists of African Americans (69%) also is home to a significant amount of residents who identify as Hispanic (21%), White (3%), Asian (3%), American Indian, or Alaskan Native (1%), Other race (2%), and Two or More Races (1%). The population has a slight majority of female residents (55%) and a minority of male residents (45%) with a median age of 38 years. In Wakefield, residents are hardworking and mostly employed in white-collar jobs (83.98%), with a substantial amount working in blue-collar jobs (16.02%). Most residents work for private companies (59.49%), 17.93% are government workers, 16.9% work for nonprofit organizations, and 5.69% are self-employed.
