History

Morris Heights is a longstanding community in the Bronx. The area was formerly the site of the Gas Engine & Power Company & Charles L. Seabury Company which occupied the modern-day site of Roberto Clemente State Park until 1958. The company contributed to the neighborhood's industrial period, employing hundreds of community members in Morris Heights. In the years following the company's closure, Morris Heights, along with several other neighboring communities, suffered from arson in the 1970s. Many buildings were destroyed, leaving a vulnerable population. To revitalize the neighborhood, New York City developed low-income housing buildings in Morris Heights, followed by the construction of several townhouses. The 1970s were a major era for Morris Heights; not only did the community suffer the effects of arson, but it also is believed to be the origin of Hip Hop culture. During the 1970s, many community members would gather to create music about their struggles and dreams, resulting in the beloved hip-hop genre we all know today.
