History

Modern-day East Bronx's history began around 1639 when European settlers moved to the area. East Bronx was originally considered part of West Chester County and was only referred to as the Bronx until 1874 when the region was separated into West Bronx and East Bronx. The West Bronx ceded to New York County, while East Bronx remained part of Westchester County until 1895. However, by 1914, the entire brought was referred to as Bronx County, which remains true today. Throughout the 20th century, the East Bronx progressed, experiencing changes in four stages. In the early 1900s, the area experienced a boom in population and development until the borough's population reached 1.3 million in 1930. The Great Depression heavily impacted the area's population resulting in population and economic decline. By the mid-1900s, the entire borough shifted and became a predominately low-income area. This era was challenging for community members because the region experienced a surge of crime and poverty in several neighborhoods. However, the East Bronx welcomed development resurgence in the 1980s, allowing the area to progress. Today, the region continues to develop and is considered a thriving community.
