Daniel David Palmer was an interesting man. In the 1800s, he was interested in forms of medicine that did were drugless. For a long time, he practiced magnetic healing, until one fateful day in his office when he made a spinal adjustment to a janitor.
As legend has it, Palmer was working in his office when he noted that the janitor, who was emptying a trash can, had a lump near his spine. When he asked the man about it, the janitor told him that he had felt a pop years before and had experienced pain ever since. He also noted that his hearing had decreased after the pop. Palmer performed a spinal adjustment and the man reported feeling immediate relief. A few days later, he also reported that his hearing had improved.
This experience introduced Palmer to the world of spinal and joint manipulation and two years later, he opened the Palmer School Of Chiropractic.
