Historically speaking, chiropractic care is a fairly recent discovery. Although physicians for thousands of years have manipulated the spine to provide relief to patients, it wasn't until 1887 that Daniel David Palmer coined the term chiropractic and opened up the Palmer School Of Chiropractic.
Two years prior to opening his school, Palmer had been practicing as a magnetic healer. While working in his office, his janitor came in to clean. Palmer noted that the janitor had a knot near his spine and learned that the knot had been there for several years after the janitor lifted a heavy object and felt a pop.
Palmer asked to treat the janitor and the man agreed. After applying gentle pressure and doing what he thought would align the spine into a better position, Palmer got the knot to go away and the janitor said he felt immediately better. In later statements, Palmer also said the janitor told him that his hearing had improved after the adjustment.
The number of chiropractic adjustments needed to treat a patient depends on the type of injury that was sustained and their overall health. In some cases, just a few adjustments will be needed while other patients could require ongoing care for years.
Although some patients feel a bit of discomfort, chiropractic adjustments shouldn't hurt. Chiropractors used the least amount of pressure to perform an adjustment. The next day, a patient may feel sore.
