The Siwanoy lived on the land that is now Purchase, NY long before any European settler reached American shores. This Native American tribe moved their temporary villages frequently, following the change of seasons.
When Europeans did arrive, they traded goods and metals to the Siwanoy for land in New York. One of those trades was the "Harrison Purchase".
According to legend, an Indian chief sold John Harrison as much land as he could cover on horseback in a day. Historians, however, dispute this, stating that the land changed hands several times before being owned by John Harrison. In 1724, a group of Quakers started building their settlement on this land.
Today, Purchase, which is a hamlet that is part of the town of Harrison, has a population of more than 5,000.
Purchase lies around 27 miles outside of Manhattan and provides easy access to trains, highways, and the Westchester Airport. The small hamlet has not one, but two colleges, the State University of New York at Purchase and Manhattanville College.
